As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands. (Psalm 119:143, NLT)
The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord . . . (Psalms 97:5, NKJV)
What can you do when circumstances get out of control and stress overpowers you? Don’t you wish you could make problems go away like magic? Here’s a secret!
Last week, my temper flared when Tim and I had an argument. I felt stuck. Willie-niverred. Stuffed.
Scalding anger came to a rapid boil as I realized that the enemy was purposing to keep me zeroed in on the negatives. Our differences. Past offenses. Old patterns.
Has that happened to you? Like me, do you think, “Oh, no. Not again. How did I get here? This problem is bigger than me. Where’s my way out?”
Turn to the Holy Spirit. He’s got a secret: His “Shrink-it Mode.” Here how it works:
1.) Enter into worship and soak in God’s presence. Let down. Allow Him to be your safe place. I love the lyrics to a song called Holy Spirit (by Jesus Culture):
“Holy Spirit you are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory God, is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by your presence Lord
Let us become more aware of your presence
Let us experience the glory of your goodness!”
2.) Set the problem, issue, or person down before you. Consider its worst, most painful, anxiety-ridden part. Imagine it’s a huge blue physio ball. Now, in the presence of the Living God, imagine the Holy Spirit shrinking the problem to the size of a four-square ball. Then it shrinks again, this time to the size of a tennis ball. Then it becomes a golf ball. A marble. And then it becomes so small, you can barely see it. The size of a mustard seed!
Q. Does the problem still exist?
A. Yes and no.
Jesus prayed, ““ . . .Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10, NIV)
To others who look at the experience through earthly eyes, there may be no change. But, indeed, a supernatural shift has occurred. You’ve come into agreement with how God frames it: on earth as it is in heaven.
Practicing the presence of God shrinks your perception of a problem. It allows you to see it as God does. Since His nature is 100% good and loving, and He’s intentional about everything He touches, He’s confident of every outcome, and now you are, too. Every negative, then, is just a distraction.
Welcome to warfare.
For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5, NIV)
Good news: arguments are demolished and thoughts are captured, and made obedient to Jesus in the transforming presence of God.
Friend, I pray that you have an overwhelmingly deep encounter with the Holy Spirit as He melts all your problems like wax.
What’s the Holy Spirit’s role in “His will be done—on earth as it is in heaven”? What’s yours?
