A few Christmas lights, a cup of cocoa, and a grinning community choir. Dozens of moms and dads wearing knit hats and gloves, tucked beneath rainbow-splashed umbrellas in driving rain, were ready for the tree-lighting ceremony.
Saturday evening, my four-year-old grandson, Logan, clip-clopped along in his rain boots. He scrambled onto a concrete wall that flanked the Christmas tree in Oregon City, the town that hosted clip-clopping horses at the end of the Oregon Trail years ago.
Logan’s eyes danced with joy as he used a finger to trace the trail of dancing green laser lights on the courthouse stairway wall.
Like Logan, are you wrapped up in the sparklehood and twinkletivity of Jesus’ birthday? You know, houses lit up with a zillion rainbow lights, nativity scenes depicting the virgin birth, and signs that declare Wise men still seek Him?
I’m working as a substitute teacher these days, and a rush of memories fills my head and heart.
Once I substituted for an elementary school music teacher for two weeks. The children played recorders, preparing for a school concert. A third grade girl stayed after class to ask, “Mrs. Hare, do you believe in magic? ” She glanced at friends who waited for her in the hallway.
I said, “Do I believe in magic – pulling a rabbit out of a hat and making an elephant disappear? No.”
She frowned, crestfallen. “Oh.”
“I believe in Jesus and His miracles. He multiplied fish and bread and fed thousands of people. He came to heal the blind and sick. He forgives us for stuff we do wrong! That’s what I believe in.”
The girl flashed a grin and raced out to her friends.
“She said ‘yes!'”
Have a sparklehood and twinkletivity Christ-magic week, my friend!
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).
Friend, where is the true magic of Christmas found?
Imagine the possibilities!
