Bill Johnson: Are You a Sheep Among Wolves?

Are you in conflict with a hostile person and wondering where God’s protection’s found? Maybe God doesn’t promise to protect you. Maybe He’s giving you camouflage instead.

Check out this excerpt of a message given by Bill Johnson at the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry in Redding, California.

“‘Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves’ (Matthew 10:16).

“What kind of defense do sheep have? They have a bite, but not like a wolf!

“In the natural, it would seem cruel for a shepherd to send sheep where the wolves are. But That’s the nature of the kingdom that we’re a part of.  It’s an invasive Kingdom. Our strength is not in might. Our strength, we know, is in the Shepherd who protects us. But that’s even tested in this verse. Because that’s not the emphasis.

“He doesn’t say, ‘I send you out as sheep among the wolves, but I’ll protect you.’ He says, ‘I’ll send you out as sheep among the wolves, therefore be wise and be pure.’ Wisdom and purity are your safety. They’re your camouflage.

“The Lord actually gave us a mechanism when He sent us out into known conflict. I take you back to the very beginning. God created Adam and Eve and put them in a garden and a hostile environment all around that garden. He created humanity for His pleasure, but the initial assignment was to confront an adversary. And that assignment continues in our entire walk with the Lord, where we’ve been placed in an assignment that is hostile.

“When He says, ‘Be wise as serpents, innocent as doves,’ the word ‘innocent’ there is ‘pure.’  Be pure. Carry Holy Spirit purity into that environment. It’ll keep you safe. Be wise. When you engage with somebody who’s hostile, somebody who doesn’t know the Lord, never try to win them over in their territory. Don’t try to battle with their reasoning or power. Demonstrate wisdom and purity. Demonstrate the love of Christ. Demonstrate the sense of mission that you’ve come to serve.”

Friend,  what’s the role of humility as you demonstrate purity and wisdom in a hostile situation?

Natalie, yes – I had the same response! This message was a paradigm-shifter for me. “God permits in His wisdom what He could easily spare by His power,” as Graham Cooke says. Who would figure that God is permitting things to happen and allowing wisdom and purity to be our safety? Wow.

Good post! I love reading everything Bill Johnson has to say. My one suggestion is to edit your headline, omitting Bill’s name. Have it read simply …. Are You a Sheep Among Wolves? Then you can credit Bill in para one as you did.

The reason for this is that upon reading the headline, I wondered if this post would bash Bill Johnson. There are so many bashers out there. Removing his name from the headline would clear up any misconception of what is coming. Just my thoughts. It’s your blog. PS: I love your heart after God!

Hi Kathryne, I love Bill Johnson, too. And I understand what you mean about people when they criticize God’s leaders. God never honors that. I sometimes have guest bloggers or highlight speakers to share with my blog readers. I include their names (such as Bill Johnson or Graham Cooke) for their fans who might otherwise pass over the email without the name in the title. My heart is to edify, exhort, and comfort readers with the intent to encourage.
