How Reducing Stress Helps You Forgive Yourself (Part 2 of 2)

In Part 1, we took a look at benefits of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).  Here are some practical steps you can take to help you be more mindful of your mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Take these mindfulness steps and see your self-forgiveness and self-acceptance grow.

  • Check in with your body regularly. My daughter Emily meets with me Tuesday afternoons. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate how I’m doing with exercise, rest, emotions, hydration, and stress reduction. (Weekly we add new foods, healthy recipes, and menu planning, too.)When you and I take inventory, it gives us a chance to slow down our bodies and minds and to assess areas where we can improve.

When we take care of our bodies, we can hear from Co-Co (Comforter and Counselor, the Holy Spirit) more clearly. Without the background noise of headaches, dehydration, and nerves churning with haste and frenzy, we can settle in. Exhale stress. Inhale peace. Receive God’s counsel—the very thing we need to accept ourselves.

  • Build regular breaks into your week. Every Wednesday is my Wordless Wednesday. I sleep in. Decompress. Hike by a stream. Draw. Where can you make real estate for margin in your schedule? Maybe you don’t have a whole day available weekly. Can you carve out an hour?
  • Eat more slowly, noticing the taste and texture of foods as you carefully chew and swallow. Be more mindful of relaxation as you eat. What happens when you do?
  • Take time to release self-judgment and self-condemnation. Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). Do the Elsa from Frozen thing. Let it go. Jesus has. Always will. He sees us with greater compassion than we do ourselves. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him (John 3:17).  Write a journal entry about your condemnation-free zone.
  • Write out 3 negative emotions (like fear, anger, or worry). Then write out 3 God-truths found in Scriptures—like Greater is He who is in me than He who is in the world (1 John 4:4) or I am Christ’s friend (John 15:15) or God’s power works through me (Ephesians 3:7).
  • Post the Scriptures where you can access them from multiple devices. Read them aloud. Memorize them. Interact with the living, breathing pulse of the Holy Spirit in these verses of the Word. Heaven’s sound is yours!

Taking these steps will increase your cognitive sense of God’s realized, tangible presence. In the process, lies will be exchanged for God-truths in a supernatural, transactive (exchanging) process. Self-acceptance and self-forgiveness follow.

Here is a safe place where Jesus can make Himself known to you more deeply. And when He does, look out! Be prepared for a new trajectory!
