There, in the presence of the Lord your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the Lord your God has blessed you. (Deut. 12:7)
Over the doorway of a Japanese restaurant in Portland is a sign: Free bento tomorrow. The catch? The sign is painted there permanently! The free food is always one day away.
How many times have I put off spending time alone with God till tomorrow? More than I care to remember. Chatting with Him, listening to Him, looking to Him, practicing the presence of God throughout the day is where relationship with Him is developed and fostered.
God is creative, and regularly shows us creative ways to encourage others. I asked God how to encourage children. I heard, “Smile and laugh – bring them joy.” I asked Him how to encourage people who are grieving. I heard, “Sit with them and listen.” I asked God how to encourage those broken by others’ mean-spirited acts of division. I heard, “Pray and show them how to walk in the opposite spirit, demonstrating forgiveness and grace.” In all of these, there was no reason to delay. They were here-and-now deals.
What Spirit-led acts of kindness is God creatively showing you to do for others today?
